San Gimignano: l’usura attraverso i secoliSan Gimignano: money lending at San Gimignano through the centuries

by redaction – Money lending as a phenomenon stimulated by special economic problems, whether public or private, has been a controversial subject from time immemorable and quite often, and certainly in the case of San Gimignano, many of the most important families gained much of their power and success from usury: among them we should remember the Braccieri, the Baroncetti, the Useppi, the Moronti, the Mangeri, the Mantellini, the Ruggerotti, the Ardinghelli, the Paltoni, the Pellari, the Becci and the Salvucci hgh hormone releasers families (to mention only a few), all of whom, from the early 13th century onwards, lent money to private citizens, the Town Council, the Bishop and the Church with a stipulated interest rate that ranged from between 20 to 30%.

However, although it was practiced on a large scale, this activity was limited to the 13th century and the early decades of the 14th century, at least as far as the merchants were concerned who had made their fortunes by trading with various countries in Europe and overseas.
When these merchants came back home, they offered to lend people money on interest; when they were not paid back, they were entitled to seize their debtors’ possessions and thus gradually added to the estates – houses and land – that they had purchased earlier with the riches made from their trading activities.

However, after the great plague in 1348, which was a heavy blow to the demographic and economic situation, closely followed by San Gimignano’s submission to Florence (which seriously narrowed down the political horizons), the townspeople – even those who had once been extremely rich – found themselves forced to beg for help from the Florentine and Sienese bankers to be able to continue any sort of business concern.
Even the Town Council was forced at times to beg for loans in order to be able to guarantee its public administration and, by the beginning of the 16th century, had negotiated and made arrangements for loans with the Sienese banks belonging to the Tolomei and Salimbeni families, and with the Frescobaldi family in Florence. However while they were negotiating loans with Pisan bankers, the governors of San Gimignano were also inviting Jewish money lenders to take up residence in the city of towers.

In the early decades of the 14th century a group of Jews, headed by Diodato, apparently lived in the quarter of San Giovanni and lent money “on pledge” while other groups of Jews carried out the same profession in this city from the beginning of the 15th century under the leadership of Eliuccio from Viterbo, Isacco from Pisa and Vitale from Rome.

The 1410 book of reforms written during the rule of Podest Andrea Giugni, tells us about three Jews requesting permission to live in San Gimignano in order to carry out the profession of “money lenders”, in other words, as usurers.
These particular Jews were Vitale di Mattasia from Rome and his sons Dattario and Daniele together with a certain Tommaso, who is not better identified.

Following a ruling by the council, they were given permission to reside in the city for ten years, in exchange they had to pay 100 florins a year for their licence and live in two different quarters of the city.
Like the Jews that preceded them, these were the only duties they had to pay, apart from the usual taxes. The negotiations between the varies Communities and the Jews were dictated by the most complete decisional freedom: sometimes requests were made, other times concessions were granted, according to the various needs, while the conditions were stipulated in written contracts, though this often caused problems with Florence or the Pope as regards the taxes they ought to pay, their tithes and work permits and even the privileges they had acquired which, once gained, they were not prepared to give up.

A typical example of this was when the town of San Gimignano was excommunicated for having allowed a Jew ” to work in usury in that area” without a permit from the Apostolic see; according to the book of reforms published under Podest Antonio Giraldi, this excommunication was lifted six years later, on April 7th 1464, by Pope Pius II Piccolomini.
Victims of the period and the various governments, the Jews lost all their privileges from the 16th century onwards with the result that their flourishing activity was lost in the mists of time.

In actual fact, the hostile attitude of the poorer people against the Jews because of the high interest rates on their loans eventually led to the foundation of the Monti di Pegno (pawnshops) – later called Monti di Pietà – which flourished in particular in the 19th century and have survived, with varying popularity, to this day.

San Gimignano also moved with the times and set up its first pawnshop in 1501, confirming its presence in 1572 with the support of Grand Duke Cosimo I dei Medici. From then on, therefore, only a public organization was allowed to act as a money lender to the public, replacing a service that was formerly carried out either by a group of families or a group of Jews.

Come affrontare al meglio neve e ghiaccioHow best to tackle snow and ice

verificare che i tergicristalli siano perfettamente a filo con la superficie da     liberare dall’acqua;
controllare la batteria che con il freddo corre il rischio di scaricarsi;
mettere l’antigelo nel radiatore e nel liquido per pulire i parabrezza;

Indossare abiti e soprattutto calzature idonee all’eventualità di sostenere spostamenti a piedi.

Cosa fare a casa

What to do for your car

As we approach the winter months it is advisable to carry out the following engineering controls to your car:

verify that the wipers are perfectly flush with the surface to be free from water;

check that the battery with the cold runs the risk of discharge;

put the antifreeze in the radiator and liquid to clean the windshield;

if you plan to travel frequently on snow tires should be replaced with conventional ones specific to the snow that compounds more suitable for cold and designs that ensure a better grip.

Snow chains must always be ready for use, because in the presence of abundant snow winter tires may not be enough. In addition, failure to comply with this advice could cost you a fine: attention, controls have already begun with the first high penalties. The chains must only be used on snow-covered roads to avoid the risk of damage, impair driving safety and to avoid damage to the organs of attitude.

What to do for the road

Drive as well as being mandatory to use snow tires or chains is recommended to always keep on hand a pair of work gloves and the use of snow chains should always be tried before the occurrence of the emergency situation.

During the event snowy never wait to mount snow chains when you are already in difficulty especially if you have to face the presence of paths with ascents and descents too small slope.

Do not go on the trip if you have a bit of practice driving on snow and if you feel stuck or do not have the proper equipment. Park your car safely on the side of the road and walk to find a suitable shelter.

Do not leave your car in the conditions that may obstruct the normal flow of other vehicles and in particular of operational resources and emergency.

Helping people in need and do not hesitate to ask for help when needed, or rather if in doubt if you are not completely sure on how to mount the chains to park your car even within private property, for advice and information, etc..

Always preferable, where possible, the use of public transport and never use the two-wheeled vehicles.

Wear appropriate footwear and especially the possibility to support walking.

What to do if you find yourself stuck in the car in the middle of a traffic jam

If you find yourself stuck in the middle of a traffic jam because you do not know for how long, be careful how much fuel you have in the car and if the tank is less than a quarter do not constantly keep the engine running, but alternate on and off at a rate of 10 minutes Ignition and 30 off to keep the engine and the passenger compartment in temperature.

In these cases, the radio is a valuable resource, we are trying to activate a network of local radio in case of emergency are available to give information on traffic conditions and advice on possible alternative routes.

Do not get attached to the phone calling everyone to let them know of your misfortune or ask for help because you do not know what you need to be in a situation where you are and often emergency numbers are clogged, save the battery of your phone, can be decisive. Identify a person at home or in the office to do for you by calling from the traffic police, Civil Defence and the Municipality for information and make any requests for help. Using the phone just to talk through with your lengthen the life of your batteries and the ability to stay in touch.

If you need to make urgent requests for help, be prepared to provide the following information: the street where you are (eg: A1 or SGC FIPILI or and) if you do not know the name of the road at least try to know the names of the outputs indicate closer and the direction you are traveling (eg from Florence north to south, or highway between Empoli and Pisa Montopoli in direction).

What to do at home

We recommend all to be equipped with an adequate and appropriate supply of salt to be used for private roads (including pedestrian) for any sidewalks external to equip each building (organizing among condominiums) minimum of equipment such as shovels and wheel Snow.

And ‘in fact necessary in the event of ice and snow to protect public safety all citizens to undertake to remove snow and ice in front of their homes and businesses, clean the gutter road, clear drains and manholes to facilitate the flow of water, spread an appropriate amount of salt if frost is expected, open gates at pedestrian crossings and intersections, break down any blades in snow and ice hanging from roof eaves and grondai and remove cars parked at the roadside to allow the free roadways.

This is not only a civic duty of every citizen, but a precise obligation of the Rules of the municipal police that not everyone knows!

If you need to walk around making sure that the roof or the eaves there is no danger of falling snow drifts, especially in the days after the snowfall during the thaw are frequent drops in heaps from the rooftops.

How to properly use the salt

The salt can be used to act only on ice formations of limited thickness.

E ‘therefore advisable to take preventive action by salting where there are notices of ice formation bearing in mind that the salt does not produce any effect in the presence of excessive thickness and / or in the presence of too rigid temperatures (below -10 °).

In the event of heavy snowfall in place to remove, before shedding the salt, almost completely snow.

The amount of salt to be spread must be proportional to the thickness to be solved: an example with one kilogram of salt can treat 20 square meters. Larger quantities can damage the flooring.

It ‘important to remember that it is always megllio use salt specifically designed to thaw and only when strictly necessary, you can use the coarse salt.

Never use water to remove accumulated snow and ice on them especially if it was previously scattered salt.

How to protect your water supply

And ‘well the approach of the cold season to make the right information from the manager of water services on measures to be taken to protect the water supply from possible ice. However it is always advisable to protect the meter from being frozen, using insulating materials and in house when temperatures fall below -5 ° keep constantly open to a flow of water for at least one of the taps.

La farmacia dell’ospedale di S. FinaThe pharmacy in the hospital of S. Fina

In the hospital of S. Fina Electronic Cigarette, founded following the death of the Saint (12th March 1253) thanks to the offers left on her tomb by pilgrims and the action of the Comune which promoted its construction and became its patron, there was a pharmacy which was built a few years later (1508) as an independent hospital structure. The medicines prescribed by the doctors were prepared here. The old recipes include interesting and curious remedies against the plague which were applied during the epidemic of 1631-1633; not only were thousands of pounds of honey used for soothing the throat and coughs but also a considerable quantity of violets which, as well as being used for various medications, were probably also used to disinfect and perfume the closed rooms of the hospital as it was believed that diseases were picked up through miasmic air. A large number of recipes involved the production of scent holders which were held to the nostrils in order to “filter” the air being breathed. To prevent the “poison” inhaled from entering the saliva, people were advised to chew bitter roots in order to disinfect the mouth. Sweating preparations or purges were also prepared to expel the “poison” through the pores or the intestine. This pharmacy once owned a splendid collection of vases dating back to between the second half of the fifteenth century and the nineteenth century, some of which were locally produced while others came from various kilns in Faenza, Montelupo, Siena, Montaione, Gambassi and Florence. The collection was later transferred to the Museum of Palazzo Venezia, Rome, in 1983 and was enriched with documentary material. In the second half of the thirteenth century, during the maximum flowering of S. Gimignano, the wealth of the hospital grew thanks to donations and the purchases of land, houses and mills. In spite of the attempts of the Church to take over the hospital, it stayed in the hands of the Comune and soon became the most important one in the town, comparable, for wealth and number of patients, only to that of S. Maria della Scala.
