Firenze: esposti in Battistero tre profeti di DonatelloFlorence: Baptistery exposed in three prophets of Donatello

by redaction – For the first time exceptionally visible to the public in the Baptistry after the restoration , three large sculptures by Donatello. For the Imberbe he first restoration after 500 years!

Since last May 3 and until November 30, you can then see inside the Florentine Baptistery these three large sculptures by Donatello : Prophet beardless or bearded Prophet and the Prophet Jeremiah thoughtful , sculpted in marble by Donatello between 1415 and 1436 of the sixteen figures commissioned several artists from the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto’s Bell Tower to adorn between 1330 and 1430 .

The show , the brainchild of Sergio Recovered , is organized by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore after the great success of the exposition in the Baptistery in 2012, the three Crosses of Brunelleschi, Donatello and Michelangelo.
The exposure of the three prophets is made possible by the temporary closure of the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, where the statues are preserved, which will reopen to the public in the autumn of 2015 completely renovated and doubled the exhibition space .

Of the three Prophets of Donatello, the Imberbe will be visible for the first time after the restoration , carried out by the ” Workshop of restoration of the Opera” , active from 1296 , which has also intervened on two other Prophets of Donatello or the Bearded thoughtful and Abraham and Isaac. This is the first restoration work carried out on these sculptures , after 600 years of its implementation.

The Prophet beardless appeared in a poor state of repair with scabs and dirt deposits on the entire surface . The degradation was mainly due to prolonged exposure to the elements , when the statue was still in the niches of the Campanile of Giotto.
To clean the statue from encrustations and deposits , the laser was used and where it has not been possible action was taken with a scalpel and ion exchange resin .

The figure of the prophet Imberbe is inspired by the classic model of the speaker but is characterized by a strong realism and a deep expressive intensity . The head is treated with penetrating identification physiognomy that has nothing conventional . According to tradition, it is the portrait of Filippo Brunelleschi.
The statue is 192.5 cm high and was built by Donatello between 1416 and 1418 to the east side of Giotto’s Bell Tower , the one facing the Brunelleschi’s Dome, which at the time had yet to be built. The Prophet Imberbe is certain work by Donatello, in spite of Vasari’s attribution to Niccolo Lamberti , as demonstrated by the documents found by Poggi in 1909, from which we get the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore commissioned two prophets of the last east to Donatello in 1415 .

The Prophet bearded or pensive ( 195 cm high) is the second of the statues made by Donatello for the Giotto’s bell tower , was paid in July 1420 , two years after the Prophet beardless . Comparing them there is a greater monumentality in Barbuto, a majesty already explored by the artist in St. John the Evangelist , carved on the facade of the Duomo in Florence between 1408 and 1415 , and the San Marco made for Orsanmichele 1411-13 . the unusual gesture of his right hand , mired in his beard , says the character’s head tilted forward , evokes the inner state of serious and thoughtful that was to characterize many of the prophets of Israel.

Coming from the recesses of the Third Order of the Bell Tower , The Prophet Jeremiah (194 cm in height ) was executed by Donatello between 1427 and 1435 . This is another work of great psychological penetration. Donatello was inspired by the Roman portraiture impressing the face of a prophet disconcerting realism . It’s not a classic facial , idealized , but that of a man of flesh and blood , with the beard , the forehead and the lower lip protruding , his eyes tired but alert. The drapery plagued with deep pockets of shadow created by the folds broken emphasize the dramatic nature of this figure . In the early sixteenth century Michelangelo Donatello nelGeremia find one of his sources of inspiration for the David.

“The Prophets of Donatello, speak and pulse of inner life. These statues want to be – says Sergio Recovered – figures of real men, personifications of exemplary citizens , in which they are solidified spiritual and cultural values of the matrix is both Christian pagan philosophers , architects and politicians, who undertook to do in Florence cradle of the Renaissance in the arts, the pearl of the Christian world. They stand up, but lived on earth. In the three Prophets we read also the different forms of mediation prophetic : the gathering who acts in contemplation , one that uses the intelligence of divine things by applying it to action industrious , one that persuades the crowds moving in word and images in the heat of faith. An intellectual engagement that greek ideal of contemplation, monastic isolation , supports or opposes a willingness to working for the common good , as in Coluccio Salutati and St. Bernardine of Siena , Leonardo Bruni and Poggio Bracciolini . ”

Donatello realized the other two statues for the Campanile of Giotto, in addition to the three prophets now on display : the Sacrifice of Isaac , which ended November 6 , 1521 in collaboration with Nanni di Bartolo , and Habakkuk carved before 1426 .
