Siena: for the first time visited the “sky” of the Cathedral

by Nadia Fondelli – It ‘just begun the long season opening (it will be until October 27) of “heaven” of the Cathedral of Siena.

Going up ativan causing palpitations the 85 steps of bold spiral staircase, on the side of the Gothic facade climbs, really seems to touch the sky.

The title given to the event of “The Gate of Heaven” for these unmissable and unique tours is therefore more than a success.

A few years ago, our staff when she kept Chianti News was invited to preview the great site to visit and work in progress, talking with a colleague who had the honor of that exclusive I must say that during and after really confirm the grandeur of the restoration.

If only that you have retrieved the extraordinary wooden trusses partially destroyed by termites and tempered all the rooms that were nothing more than exclusive suites peri seagulls Sienese …

In fact, our special correspondent in the “sky” Siena still to be recovered at the time was amazed at the amount of long and patient work that was taking place and during today’s visit was even more amazed at the successful completion of that huge work.

Maybe we can tell us more than others of the sky having had the good fortune to follow him “work in progress”, perhaps we were excited more than others in climbing the spiral staircases, nell’affacciarsi on the outside and inside of the Sienese masterpiece to admire the grandiostà of extraordinary mastery of the art he views the Montagnola red rooftops senses, the Basilica of San Domenico and the Campo.

The Cathedral of Siena does not stop to surprise really. Still enchanted by the rediscovery of the extraordinary floor made of marquetry designed by the greatest masters of history and admired already in two years by thousands of people we have, after lowering his eyes, lift them to the sky, where after the 85 steps we will walk, really touching the sky in uun unique path.

Long and exhausting restoration restituiscno ogg us the vision of a series of rooms, never open to the public and where for centuries no one has been able to access.

After 85 steps, spiral, almost secret hidden from view because of the visitors and that are located in the tower of one of the pinnacles of the façade, quite suddenly, we are above the starry vaults of the nave and the right starts here a special route, a route reserved for small groups who reserve a series of discoveries and emotions.

Guests can enjoy the scenic views and unique “inside” and “outside” of the cathedral. Spectacular stained glass windows by Ulisse De Matteis with the representation of the Apostles, the view from the top floor of the magical and the main sculptural monuments, indoor dome with the ‘Pantheon’ of the saints of Siena, the four patron, St. Catherine and St. Bernardino , the ‘giants’ gold that protect from the community of the faithful.

It then runs through the gallery of the dome from which you can admire the high altar, a copy of the window by Duccio di Buoninsegna, with the almond in the center of the Assumption, and the sculptural masterpieces.

And “out” from the cathedral here is the ‘facing, the left aisle, where a splendid view. The Amiata, the Sienese mountains, the hills over there and, under the Basilica of San Domenico, the red roofs of Siena and the bold Mangia tower that dominates the field.

It finally enters behind the table in front of the terrace that overlooks the Piazza del Duomo with the view of the Hospital of St. Maria della Scala and access to the balcony on the counter from where you have a general view of the nave and the look is accompanied by the rhythm from the heads of the popes and emperors, through the inlays with the philosophers of the ancient world who have spoken sentences.

A unique excursion not to perddere. An hour and a half of magic between art and sky …
